For the past 20 years, Charles Goldman has been making work that has explored notions concerning the nature of experience. Through paintings, sculptures, installations and sound works, Goldman mines the vast rupture between our lives and the individual moments that make it up. The equation, D + S + T = X, X = I, is a result of that research. Translated, the equation reads -- DISTANCE PLUS SPACE PLUS TIME EQUALS EXPERIENCE, AND EXPERIENCE EQUALS THE INDIVIDUAL. This exhibition, also of the same name, is the first presentation of the four elements that make up this body of work.
Charles Goldman was born in San Francisco, CA in 1966. He received a BA in both Painting and American Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a MFA in Studio Art from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Recently, he has completed projects for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Louisiana State University, the Art Caucasus-International Contemporary Art Forum in Tbilisi, Georgia, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art and the Toronto Sculpture Garden.
